About

Formed through the dicey world of Craigslist musician ads, NonGrata came together in Iowa City in late 2017 through a series of loud, cramped basement jam sessions between Mikey Swafford (guitar), Greg Beaver (drums), and Joe Gephart (vocals), who would later bring Brandon Kilcoyne (guitar) in to fill out the sound (and make the practice space even more cramped.) With the addition of Matthew Hepworth (bass) in August of 2018 (seriously, everyone’s butts were touching at this point), the band caravaned down to Geneseo, IL’s The Attic Studios to record their first single (“Who Saves The Hero”) with Jose Urquiza (3 Years Hollow) and Morgan Rose (Sevendust) – quickly followed by tracks with Ari Mihalopoulos (Destrophy, Otep), culminating in the debut EP Internal Affairs in late 2018. Multiple songs from the EP started getting airplay on KFMW’s Noise from the Garage in early 2019, and the band has since played shows throughout Iowa and Illinois, including opening for Bobaflex and Hallow Point in May and June of 2019, respectively. NonGrata returned to The Attic Studios in June, resulting in “Original Sin”; with just enough time to catch their breath at the end of the summer, they recorded the hard-hitting EP Ashes with Mihalopoulos, released in October 2019, followed by a run of shows in Iowa and Illinois through the last 2 months of 2019. As 2020 dawns, NonGrata is ready to embrace whatever comes their way…
